The Role: 

The Vice President (VP) of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) is a key leadership role at Newsela, currently reporting the CEO along with strong partnership to the Chief People Officer and direct accountability to Newsela’s DEIB Board Chair. This position is charged with building out Newsela’s long-term strategic plans and driving operational execution around DEIB internally as well as supporting Newsela externally as a leader in DEIB and anti-bias/anti-racist (ABAR) education and instruction.  This person will lead a team of 2 (to start) and influence leaders across the company to drive meaningful and measurable progress in advancing true equality in the workplace and in K-12 Education. As a tech platform that was built on democratizing learning and bringing accessible, culturally relevant content to K-12 education, Newsela has weaved equity and inclusion as founding principles in our business. Leading Newsela’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, the VP, DEIB will be responsible for. 

Why You’ll Love This Role:

While many companies are talking about DEIB or are on the early stage of their journey, Newsela is more advanced in it’s journey. The CEO and Board of Directors (among the greater Leadership team and employee base) have demonstrated universal support in advancing DEIB/ABAR across the company and in education. The role already has resources to support DEIB work, including 2 existing direct reports at the  Director and Manager level. And the company has a history of putting in place and achieving DEIB goals (like improving representation in leadership and measuring employees sense of inclusion and belonging on a semi-annually basis) and establishing progressive policies, practices, trainings  (like Inclusion Norms and our customized four-part university-level course on Undoing Racism). We’re looking for a VP of DEIB who can take us on the next phase of our journey, who will be equally focused on internal as well as external DEIB work,  and will partner with employees and executive leadership across the company to lead an holistic effort to cultivate a more diverse workforce, a fair and inclusive culture, and support equity in education.

 Why We’ll Love You: 

You’re either someone who has held diversity and inclusion leadership roles where you’ve demonstrated the ability to drive measurable behavior change; or you’re a leader of a business function (e.g. Sales, Marketing, Human Resources, etc) who has led DEIB initiatives within it or in pro-bono situations who has a proven record of improving  DEIB initiatives (like improving the diversity of talent, finding ways to create inclusive cultural environments, or building out mentorship and development programs for underrepresented groups). You are a true change agent that has demonstrated you can establish a vision and strategy, operationalize it, and galvanize teams (through direct management and influence across teams not reporting to you) to achieve impressive and measurable results.
